The 2023 Artisans Tent at the Zoar Harvest Festival

Carole & Tom Bognar - Folk Art Gourd work - Functional & Decorative Gourd Pottery

Tom & Carole Bognar

Twenty five years ago we combined our love of history and art degrees to create the world’s oldest form of pottery - that made from gourds. Being self taught on this journey, we translate our natural surroundings and historical influences from artists of the past, decorative arts and the seasons into each of our pieces. Nature is the source of our art. Therefore no two pieces are ever alike.  We have participated in many high quality folk art shows, been on national television and magazines. We have also been included in Early American Life magazine’s Directory of American Craftsman.

Decorative Gourd Pottery

The process of creating each of pieces takes at least 7 to 8 steps. We start by hand selecting each gourd from the field or barn, cleaning both the inside and out, level and cut to the shape we want. Each gourd is chosen and examined for a particular shape and style. No mass production.  Various techniques are used to create the design work.
